The signs of a kosher animal—split hooves and chewing the cud—represent the spiritual balance and continual self-examination necessary to elevate one’s involvement with the physical world. The King’s accessibility in Elul is not permission to remain comfortably “in the field,” but an invitation and empowerment to improve.
